(Honestly, I am a closet nerd, but I had to read this book for my class; so forgive me:)
\n
\nWhen Marti compares teaching to the medical field, it makes me think about one of Warlick's most profound statements in the book, that "For the first time in history, we are preparing our students for a future that we cannot clearly describe." Careers will be invented that we cannot even yet imagine. So, in preparing learners for the future, I am trying to think about how to better prepare students to LEARN, not just make sure that they have learned a given set of facts. In a sense, the steps it takes to get to the end (product\/assignment) might be more important than the product itself because this is what is transferable to other assignments and abilities.

\nThe book is also a quick read, very teacher friendly.

I know that this is new for many and it takes time to re-direct your thinking. We recently went to a wonderful workshop on Guided reading. The research is related to, but not strictly from Fountas and Pinnell. We were able to see videos of teachers and how they implemented guided reading. The teachers were current\/local to their district-not staged to go with a book. Seeing this model was helpful for me. Somehow she was able to complete that missing link. A book that I am reading is called, Strategies that Work, by Harvey and Goudvis. It's about teaching comprehesion for understanding and engagement and that is what my kids are missing. I guess it's along the lines of what Tammy is talking about, we have to find a way to reach them using 21st Century methods.","dateCreated":"1202770299","smartDate":"Feb 11, 2008","userCreated":{"username":"storain","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/storain","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
